1. Today in horrifyingly on the nose song choices for hockey RPF vids-in-my-head: The Hold Steady, Boys & Girls in America.
That's just depressing to be honest. Moving on. 2. I watched a couple of trailers yesterday. They were both for dystopias, which apparently is a thing now. Dystopias are not my favourite, but if you're going to have one I want it to have a rural countrified focus, so. This is Beasts of the Southern Wild, a movie trailer which just looks really really good. Okay so this is the new JJ Abrams/Eric Kripke show. Yeah, I just said JJ Abrams/Eric Kripke show, and millions of fangirls just screamed and went reflexively for knives. Also, it's almost a direct ripoff of the premise of S M Stirling's Emberverse, i.e. "one day technology stops working for mysterious faffy reasons and physics is broken". Only the storyline looks to have 100% fewer Wiccans and lesbians, which is a real shame. Possibly less mediaeval military tactics though, and uh, there's going to be archery and swordfighting, and also a female lead, and also it's going to be about family, and yes. Yes, I will definitely be watching it, although I am going to try the I was going to do some fic recs but everyone I know in hockey fandom I'm pretty sure stalks the tags like me, so no point really. The devil one that was sort of an SPN fusion was really pretty great even though I usually hate that kind of thing - depressing starcrossed-by-species shit. Angels, demons, whatever. I don't have a problem with vampires and werewolves; I don't know if that's because humans can always become vampires or werewolves, but I think the real issue is that angels and demons (particularly evil-by-nature or pure-by-nature) types are just so distant from humanity in needs, desires, motivations. Vampires might live for ages but their desires are pretty simple and not so different from humanity's. Demons? Yeah, not so much. seagulls in squadrons, floating down towards the sea, dark strokes against the sky dust and pigeon shit, crusted around unwashed fourth-floor windows and fans exhaust puffing thick out of cars driving up from the underground my dull teeth visible in my open mouth, the tinny sound from my headphones, the fraying knees on my cheap jeans This entry is crossposted from http://labellementeuse.dreamwidth.org/3 1. There's a really interesting discussion in this thread on ffa about some Black Widow scenes in the Avengers (being circuitous so I don't have to cut this for spoilers). I'm linking to the whole thread but I found the top subthread most interesting, particularly this comment and this one. (I'm not in this thread at all so you don't need to strain yourself trying to figure out who is me, which I always do when I get linked to an anon meme thread).
2. That really annoying thing where I had something perfect to post about at work this morning, it was like, a witty observation even, and I didn't write it down and I've completely forgotten it. Rarr. It was either about hockey or Barack Obama. Or just possibly David Shearer. 3. Relatedly, there's something about straight people getting on Grant Robertson's case about marriage equality that really sets my teeth on edge. No one could agree more than I that it would have been nice to get marriage equality rather than civil unions during the recent Labour Government, but does anyone actually remember the climate around the civil union debate? (I seriously think a lot of the people I follow on Twitter don't.) It was fucking unpleasant and it wasn't exactly something the Labour Party expended 0 political capital on in an easy appeasing mood, which seems like a lot of the attitude. Oh, civil unions are the easy slimy separate but equal option - well, that's true, they are, but I don't think at the time there was room for the hard option. 4. Hey, can we not give, like, Bill English and John Key a hard time for their record on same-sex marriage? Hey, while Opposition parties are really important, why aren't we giving the fucking government a hard time about their lack of movement on reforming the Adoption Act and introducing same-sex marriage? This is supposed to be the new Tories, innit? Hip and socially liberal and down with the kids? 5. Also, eugenics. Don't let the beneficiaries breed, sez John. This entry is crossposted from http://labellementeuse.dreamwidth.org/3 Well, that'll learn me. Went to a seminar at work today (very interesting by the way, about the effects of insulating and heating houses on energy consumption and health). I was there early to set up so I pulled out my ipod and started reading some fic, a) because I don't have the emotional wherewithal to read fiction without 1) romantic resolutions and pornography or 2) characters I am attached to already right now and b) because that's what I was going to take notes on anyway.
Before the seminar starts my coworker plops down next to me and is like, "What are you reading?" I don't think I've blushed so hard in my life. Or closed Stanza so quickly. (I told him it was none of his beeswax. I quite like him so I felt bad that I wasn't able to make up a plausible lie, but then he might have tried to look and what I was reading was definitely on the romantic-resolutions-and-pornography scale.) This entry is crossposted from http://labellementeuse.dreamwidth.org/3 Had a day at work that was pretty good right up until the last fifteen minutes, wherein I asked a coworker to please put his dishes in the dishwasher and turn it on before he left and he said "I can put them in the dishwasher now and you can turn it on, I don't know where the stuff is."
He has worked there longer than me, and doing his dishes is not in my job description. I remarked, with my eyebrows up, that it was under the sink [sidebar: duh, where the hell else would it be? I hate learned incompetence], and that I was kind of shocked. He asked me what the big deal was, I said the big deal was that he had never turned the dishwasher on in the entire time he'd worked there, and he said he didn't see that as a problem.
Reader, I murdered him.
(Not really.)
(In fact, reader, I ended up turning the dishwasher on because I was the last to leave. Which is, by the way, what I always do when I am the last one to leave, because that is what humans do.)
Anyway, the long and the short of it is that I'm still pissed and I could really use some epic slash or fslash recs, maybe with some pining? You know my fandoms. Whatever your go-to fic is when you're pissed and hungry and kinda cold.
ETA: I should probably stick here what I read tonight:

2. I made a bunch of icons. Mostly hockey icons and a few Fringe icons. The hockey ones are all Blackhawks core or Corey, basically because those are the people of whom the Blackhawks media people take pretty photos. 1. ( about 45 icons ) Uh, I don't know if there are communities or whatever where these should go? Probably not. Usual rules of engagement apply: want, take, have, credit is nice but not necessary, comments wildly adored. This entry is crossposted from http://labellementeuse.dreamwidth.org/3 Awesome weekend full of fangirls and hockey and movies (and also relatives due to a couple of ill-timed birthdays. Why were you born 60 years ago this week, uncle? Poor decision-making, very poor).
- I had a - Got to admire - Ate - Had FEELINGS ABOUT HOCKEY with the abovenamed and - Somewhere in there I watched half a rugby match (Hurricanes/Chiefs) and it was really interesting ( in a navel-gazing kind of way ) - Caring about sports was affecting my self-image strangely, so luckily there was also fangirl dessert in there with the abovenamed and - I'm gonna go read porn and do the dishes now. Blissfully great weekend. &FANGIRLS; This entry is crossposted from http://labellementeuse.dreamwidth.org/3 |
